Three ways to upgrade a T8
The choice changes both price and outcome.
- LED tube in the same fixture. Lowest material cost. Old lens and housing stay.
- Retrofit kit. New LED parts inside the old housing.
- New fixture. Highest cost, newest optics, longest warranty.
Check the ballast
Some LED tubes work with the existing ballast, some need it removed. Removing a ballast is more labor but takes out a part that can fail later.
Where T8 upgrades pay off fastest
Long hours matter most. Hallways, stairwells, garages, and 24-hour spaces usually pay back faster than a room used a few hours a week.
Common questions
- Is T8 the same as T12?
- No. T12 tubes are thicker and older. If you still have T12, that is usually a stronger upgrade case.
- Do LED tubes qualify for rebates?
- Some programs cover them and some do not, and rules change by year and utility. Confirm with the program before you buy.
